Historic Environment Scotland Technical Paper 29: Review of Hot-Mixed External Lime Coatings in Scotland 1997-2016

Craig was commissioned to undertake this review for Historic Environment Scotland (HES) as part of a wider suite of research and publications investigating and evidencing the use of traditional hot-mixed lime mortars and coatings. Building Limes Forum Ireland: Hot Lime Mortars Project

The HLM Project Team was led by Ivor McElveen and Craig Frew, providing the principle technical input and reports, with support from Yvonne Doyle, William Revie, Andrew Bradley, Robert Howard & Pat McAfee. Other than the successful technology transfer component of the project, the objective was to develop guidance on the use of hot-lime mortars for traditional stonemasonry, based on the use of commercially available materials. The report was intended to stimulate discussion and feedback and encourage further research and development, with practical outputs.
